August…The Month of Disappointment, and then Dangangropa 3 happened! (Part 1)

Standard

So, no post last month because of the mountains of disappointment. The first thing was my job and changes to the way the Department of Education was dealing with loans, really don’t want to get into that. Second, I was hoping that Suicide Squad was going to be the DC movie I loved. Sadly,

screen2bshot2b2016-08-212bat2b6-57-132bpm

So, yeah, I was pretty disappointed with the movie…and the 20 bucks I spent to see it in 3d. I won’t go into a movie review, but the 2 things that made the movie disappointing was,  1) the characterization of Harley Quinn and Joker’s relationship:

851bacd5b5b77a513c60b69795e3c023

No! No! Bad Writers! Bad Writers!

I don’t mind a change now again but, their “relationship” was never like this. It was more like this:

jokerharley27

and this:

tumblr_mdi0elh26p1qgfe3m

And don’t forget the last part of their “relationship”:

mad-love-harley-back-at-arkham-asylum-the-joker-and-harley-quinn-19909184-495-508-does-harley-quinn-promote-domestic-violence-png-150757

Now, I’m gonna go on record saying that I’m not a feminazi or anything like that, but I don’t like this characterization of Harley Quinn. For the last 20 or so years, she’s never been a relationship with the Joker like it’s Bonnie and Clyde. The “relationship” is brutally honest, it’s domestic abuse. Sure, we know that she’s a domestic abuse victim and we love her, but it’s her personality we love. She’s still a lovable psycho despite being the Joker’s personal, living breathing, punching bag. Of course, that’s not the only reason I hated what they did to her.

There’s an issue in the Harley Quinn comic where she stands up to her abuser. I mean, she’s done a few times, but never like this. She finally has  serious talk, and she realizes what type of cycle of abuse they have:

I’m not showing the whole comic and you can find it yourself, but you get the gist of it. When they went around and this to Harley and made it seem like her “relationship” with the Joker was similar to Bonnie and Clyde, I wondered what else they mucked up.

My only other nitpicks were the fact that Katana, being the total badass she is, got no lines in the movie..well 2, they did nothing with Killer Croc until the last 20 minutes of the movie, and everything else  was filler.

But, Will Smith playing Deadshot was ok, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller was scary. The scene with her murdering people could’ve been taken out, but I don’t think it took too much away from her character. Captain Boomerang was plain hilarious! Every time he was on scene, I was cracking up from any antics a he had. Even though I don’t remember that being part of his character, I still loved his antics.

static.srcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Suicide-Squad-Captain-Boomerang-character-breakdown.jpg

The ending was anti-climatic, and the rewards the squad seemed minuscule for what the did. I remember that I kind of felt bad for Deadshot not being able to get much visitation rights. Sure, he can’t get custody of his daughter because of his sentence, but it sucks that Waller won’t give him what he wanted.

So, that’s the first disappointment for me. But, there’s more to come with bad plots as I talk about part 2.

Sailor Moon Crystal…and it’s many Writing flaws…

Standard

So,  I’ve been taking time off of my blog to work on my manuscript. So, in the course of two weeks, I first caught a cold, and then cracked my toe so now I’m stuck with a boot.

56621411

It gives me time to also catch up on my Sailor Moon Crystal, which is sad.

Let me explain. Growing up, I loved Sailor Moon, I had the manga, the dolls, the DVDs, etc., but watching it close to 30, I start to see things differently. I mean, I do love the artwork. It’s actually very similar to the manga.

tumblr_nodfxfhsvn1twyshko1_500

It’s beautiful to see Princess Serenity in her original form as Naoko Takeuchi had originally intended, but sometimes, this beauty can be jarring. The color scheme actually reminds me of No Game No Life. Though, unlike Sailor Moon, No Game No Life is built around action.

tumblr_ng4uvqhefo1tyak95o2_500

It’s not ugly, it’s just slightly jarring because I’m waiting for something to blow up or some huge monster to come out of the shadows.

Despite all of my complaining, there are something that I do like about the series:

  1. There is a more modern feel to the series. Everybody knows how to use a laptop, and there are cell phones present. sailor-moon-crystal-2-11
  2. All the side arcs from the original series are removed, such as Allen and Ann. 248403033I mean, they weren’t awful, but they seemed slightly out of place. I thought they were cute, but I thought their arc dragged along a bit much. And, the Dark Talent Arc was not included, thank goodness. They were…meh…
  3. The senshi are given more action scenes when doing an attack. inner_senshi_attack_gif_by_princess_tiffany-d81ae6m
  4. Mamoru Chiba is a high school student instead of a college student. I don’t know about you, but when I found out after reading the manga that Mamoru was in college at the time, it kind of bothered me. sailor_moon_crystal_03_mamoru_chiba_school_idThough, the age of consent in Japan is 13, so I can’t be too…I’m sorry, that just grosses me out.

But, for everything I just talk about there a few things that keep it from reaching its full potential. It may have something to do with  the fact that I’m an African-American, with an emphasis on American, but I try to be a bit open minded about different cultures but some things just annoy me.

  1. The men in the series end up being complete jerks, or they’re useless. Now, I will give credit that Mamoru does more than stand around, and he’s a bit more than a sperm donor, but there are times I wish that he would stand up to his future wife and daughter when they whine. a737771c83edf4253f26ee7068a25897
  2. Usagi’s parents never ask where she’s been and, there’s no mention of any other relatives for the other senshi. Japanese teens go to school 6 days a week and I’m trying to figure out how they’re not failing. Then again, the manga makes it clear that they study for exams, where there’s absence fo that. b927984899c841f7223ed0efa4e4be64
  3. Usagi should be more mature than what she is. The manga series sees Usagi maturing over time, but the anime still has a tendency for Usagi to whine a lot. What used to be comedy to me seems to be annoying, especially when it comes to Usagi and Chibi-Usa fighting. maxresdefaultBesides the fact that it makes Usagi feel like she’s 14, this is her daughter fighting for her future-husband’s affection is just..ugh.. Again, this has something to do with the fact that I’m older, so those negative facts dig into the back of my head.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Sailor Moon, it just that some things mess with my head a bit. I just wish sometimes that Magical Girl genre could appeal better to a mature audience. Then again, Josei is the other series for older women.

The other thing is, if Sailor Moon, manga or anime could get better, there would be some things I would re-write:

  1. Less dependency on Mamoru. He’s a great guy, it’s just that with her whining, it takes away from her development into a beautiful queen.
  2. Have the characters actually study and show that there’s more than flashy colors and twirling. Girls who are brainy are valued too, and the better grades in Japan, the more likely you are to get into a good college or a great job. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, for all of its flaws, did show some good futures for the senshi, including Ami become a doctor for a British Hospital.
  3. The future needs to be changed. All fans know that Usagi becomes the Queen of Earth, gets rid of all diseases, and people live over a thousand years. But, all evil is to be rid of from Earth. The problem is, though, it seems like free will taken from the planet. That may be the crux of the fact that there was no free will, so the planet became boring.

So, that’s the feel of the Sailor Moon Crystal. The entire Sailor Moon Series will always be in my heart, but there are just a few flaws that are apparent to me.

What about you?
Have you noticed anything about Sailor Moon Crystal that is become a somewhat glaring problem?

Re-Wrting Your Entire Draft Is Hard….

Standard

So, I’m re-writing my entire first draft from scratch, and I hate it. I feel like part Takano and part Ritsu as I’m writing.

sekai-ichi-hatsukoi-full-411983If you don’t know who these two are, I’m not surpised if you’re not an anime, manga, or even..dare I say it…yaoi fan.

Yes, I fully admit to liking yaoi, which got me into reading gay erotic novels…

10481997_652412108184270_5622343190792635853_oIt’s that dirty little secret that try to keep under wraps, but husband found out and he just shakes his head at it. Seriously, he’s doing it right now. I would record him but I made a pact with him that I would keep him out of my otaku-ness as much as possible.

Now, if you’ve gotten curious about Sekai-Ichi Hatsukoi, I would recommend it…if you’re not too vanilla about relationships. In actuality, this relationship between two men could work. In fact, the writer has it so that even if the second protagonist was female, it would be still the same parallel relationship. I talk about this in another post about characterizaiton. Right now, I want to get back on track about revising my entire work.

So I’ve been spending time either on my Ipad working on my fanfiction and also re-writing my manuscript. Believe it or not, I actually get the manuscript chapter done before I write my fanficiton chapters. It’s sort of a reward for myself when I get some things done. However, this is what I’ve been going through working with this:

421c9eac3f2a2900ba14797bce541cba

To top it al off, I still have the first manuscript that I could possibly read over to get ideas, but then that makes me angirer. Have any of you ever read you frist draft? Now the writing process in school used to look like this:

0681e0c8ae6d2127ccb39baf8a352609

If you went to school in the United States, you probably remember this in elementary school. It’s still similar, but it’s more condensed to this:

cb084a1348b37942ad3ae8f7c1acf859

or this:
writers_triangle

Welcome to the nightmare of taking English or Lit classes in college. I look at this to wonder if I was an outiner, or a pantser. I think I’m more in the latter. Part of this has something to do with the aforementioned classes in college, and don’t forget the stupid papers you had to write in high school in MLA or APA format.

So, in short, I’m in revision hell. Is anybody else out there dealing wit h this?

What I Learned Writing Fanfiction

Standard

Ok, so if you you haven’t guessed from the title, I write fan fiction.

joker
(Yes, cue the lack of me being what they call ‘a real writer’ here.)

The two most recent I’m working on right now is Star Vs. The Forces of Evil and Undertale. These are not the most thought-provoking adult material…well, Undertale could be interpreted that way, but I’m interested in these two series. Star Vs. The Forces of Evil brings out my love of shojo/ magical girl and Daron Nefcey making fun of it.

Undertale…is like Doctor Who for me, just a guilty pleasure. Toby Fox really outshines himself with taking something like Mother (Earthbound) and expanding on that lore and other J-RPGs that involve kids in dangerous, adult-like situations. Yes, it sounds somewhat horrible, but don’t many of us love drama?

Why do I write fan fiction?

  1. It’s great practice. If you have ever read fan fan fiction reviews, you can gauge just what readers like and don’t like. Now, that only appeals to the genre you’re writing, but fans know when you’re writing too far out of character.
  2. It’s fun. Let’s face it, we’ve all been there where one show has royally pissed us off and we wanted to change the ending (*cough, cough* Breaking Bad), so why not have fun with it?
  3. Fan fiction reviewers are some of the biggest critics you’ll read on a post. Yes, don’t think about editors and big time editors that will someday read your draft and possibly throw it in the trash. No, you should be thinking about the reviewers that post to your stories. You know why? The same people that follow you on the fan fiction trail are probably the same people that will read you work.

Now, what I’ve learned from fan fiction is patience. You can post all you want and not get a single follower. This means waiting up all night for that one review that you hope will be a great review.

tamaki_and_fanfiction_by_deviantwatcher4532-d7tf1ua

So, where does this come in when it comes to fiction writing? Well, once you get that one review, it catches on. If you have ever gone to fanficiton.net or Wattpad, you start to notice stars or comments. It only takes one vote to catch on, and you’re off. The problem is…the waiting game.

I first started writing a Star vs. fan fiction back in March, and I only had 2 followers. Now, I’ve got 12. Not something to write home about, but something to think about  My other fan fiction is Undertale, and it’s starting to take off as well.

So, when trying to write your draft, think about writing fan fiction if you have time as practice and a way to gather an audience.

If anybody here wants to give my fan fiction a spin, check me out on:

The Writer’s Conference 2016

Standard

I just got back from the Philadelphia’s Writer’s Conference and I love every moment of it! I made friends, I learned more than writing books…and I learned that even though I write fanfiction, my regular manuscript is still good!  Speaking of manuscript….

73b

I ended up starting over the whole damn thing. So, when I submitted it, it was a second draft of a story that I ended up re-writing form the beginning and freaking out about how bad my plot was (see above).

So, this is supposed to be about the writer’s conference, right? Well…this is my second time going, and you know what I found out? Editors are not robots. Yeah…go figure, I wish knew that before in my first year.

care1012161500008308_011_640x360

They don’t hide out in a big spaceship and tell people how much they suck at their writing. Nope, they’re people like you and me. In fact, they often go out of their way to help you. One editor I met, (I won’t mention his name because he’s a newspaper editor and I don’t want his name to be out there without his permission) wore a suit and was very direct on the first day, but was complete opposite on the second day. He told me it was Saturday and he wasn’t required to wear a suit. Huh..go figure, just like most days when they make us dress up even though it’s a call center.

Anyway, if you didn’t go the Philadelphia’s Writer’s Conference in Philly, you should go next year. It was really fun this year, considering that this was the first time I entered part of a manuscript…and I was completely out of my mind about it.

peridot-breakdown

But, it was okay! I got my draft back with a crapload of grammatical errors. Which, I expected because part of this I write at work on a notebook and go home, type of the paper really quickly and go back to sleep.

All in all, good times! By the way, I’m back on my blogging grind! I’ll post in a few days after recuperating from my writer’s block and Undertale having Asgore beat the crap out of me. If you haven’t listened to this soundtrack do so…Toby Fox, you have given me musical inspiration!

Closing out with the song that’s haunting me from Agore beating me up:

I’m Not Dead…

Standard

I’m not dead, far from it. So guess what? I went to my first Writer’s Conference! It was fun!

IMG_0019Judy Ferrell is awesome! She was one of the most down to earth writers I have ever met…not that I’ve met many. Her workshop was great and I like her personality.

Oh wait…forgot to say…

I went to the 2015 Philadelphia Writer’s Conference! It was June 12th, and I’m getting to it…July 12th.

Funny story…I live in Delaware County, PA. After getting back and planning to do this…a tornado happened. A tornado never happens around here. We get weak hurricanes and bad storms, but never tornadoes!

Then…our contract with Verizon comes up and my husband decides to cut it early to not pay a bill. Needless to say…I wasn’t happy… So, I got to work on my book in my notepad….but there was no internet, no electricity, no cell phone. All the towers were down…

Then, I get back to work, and then mandatory overtime kicks in. Sure, 5 hours seems like nothing but trust me…it adds up. Then, before you know it, time has passed, hours are increased from 5 to 10…and then you feel like you’re stuck in an endless cycle.
So, I’m not dead, just dead tired by the weekend to post anything. I’m coming back soon…

Where I’ve Been For the Past 13 Months…

Standard

Yes, I’m back…with news and my exhaustion trying to take over my eyes. Started working full time August 8th, and I’m still there. I work for the state of Pennsylvania as a wage employee, and soon to be a state employee. So, I’ve been working 40 hours a week and ready to hit the bed every time I get home.

Which makes me way too tired to even work on my book, let alone a blog. However, with the recent increase in pay, I don’t need to do as much overtime anymore, which gives me more breathing space for blogging and writing.

So now that I’ve gotten the where I’ve been out of the way, there’s some news….

My book will now be written in a notebook instead of on my macbook. Why? It’s way too distracting, and it’s easier for me to put my iPod Touch in my ear and write into a notebook. I also moved, so there’s a Dunkin’ Donuts near my house…it’s diagonally across the street so I can just sit in there and write…after I order something before the employees kick me out.

New post will be up soon but as of right now *yawn*. I’m going to bed…
